A timesheet app that works with no signal
Muster records your hours on the phone whether or not there is a signal: clock in and out in a basement, a plant room or a site at the end of a lane, and it sends everything, in order and at the times you pressed, once you are back in signal.
What works with no signal
Once Muster has been opened on the phone with a signal, it opens without one. It draws your hours from a copy of your last four months kept on the phone.
- Clocking in and out
- Pausing and resuming
- Standard hours, in one tap
- Adding an entry by hand, and changing or deleting one
- Changing the note on a running shift
Each shows straight away, on Today and in the Log, marked Waiting to sync, and counted in the week's hours.
At the time you pressed
An entry made with no signal keeps the moment you pressed the button, not the moment it reached the server. A clock-in at 07:02 in a basement is a clock-in at 07:02, even if it is sent at 07:40 from the car park.
Sent once, in order
Everything recorded with no signal waits in a queue on the phone and is sent in the order you made it, whenever the app is open and has a signal. Nothing is sent twice, and if the signal goes part-way through, the rest stays queued. A strip across the top of the screen says what is happening: no signal, how many are waiting, sending, or anything the server turned away.
Hours are sent only while the app is open. Open it once you are back in signal, and before the period is submitted.
What still needs a signal
Signing in, the full pay breakdown, downloading the timesheet, Travel's day counts, saving a journey, and anything older than the copy on the phone. Each says so rather than showing nothing. Your pay so far shows the server's last figure, with its time and what it has not counted yet. Pay is never worked out on the phone.
On an iPhone
Use Muster from the home screen. Safari can clear what a website keeps on the phone after a week without a visit, and the home-screen app is kept. See Add it to the home screen.
The full detail, with every message the strip can show, is in Working with no signal.
